ARNOŠT LUSTIG, A Prayer (Modlitba)

Arnošt Lustig, A Prayer, trilingual edition

Trilingual czech-english-hebrew edition

Arnošt Lustig (1926 -2011) today ranks among world famous writers and humanists. His works include two dozens of books. His literary style is based on his own life experience and fate. Deported to the Terezín Ghetto as a 15-year old boy, Arnošt Lustig later passed through the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Having escaped from a death march to Dachau in April 1945, he took part in the May uprising against the Nazis in Prague. After World War II he studied journalism and served as a newspaper correspondent in the Israeli-Arab war in 1948. He was later in charge of a cultural column in the leading Czech youth magazine Mladý svět and worked as a script-writer in the Czechoslovak Film Studios. In 1968, he left Czechoslovakia via Italy, Israel and Yugoslavia for the United States where he lectured at universities. At present, Lustig teaches creative writing at Prague's Charles University in conjunction with the Western Michigan University. To date, Arnošt Lustig's novels and short stories have been translated into 20 foreign languages. Czech films based on his own scripts, such as Modlitba pro Kateřinu Horovitzovou, Transport z ráje, Démanty noci and Dita Saxovou, have earned him worldwide fame.
